This past Saturday, the World of Warcraft guild SeeD hosted the 4th annual Running of the Gnomes. This is an annual event held in the game to raise money for breast cancer research, as well as to raise awareness. Participants raised over $1100 for The Cleveland Clinic, where they are developing the Tuohy Vaccine that will hopefully prevent breast cancer.
Approximately 1000 participants gathered in the gnome starting area, most as level 1 pink-haired gnomes, and were able to join two different special guilds for the event, Gnomes Race for a Cure and Gnomes Race Two. The group then ran from there to Booty Bay, encountering some dangers along the way. Fortunately, there were some upper level characters, both alliance and horde, acting as protectors for the group.
Many participants video the event, and I wanted to share a couple of them here. First, we have YouTube SCEmerald, with a “fast forward” version of the whole race.
Next, from SheikFUCJ, we have a portion of the run, with some commentary from participants. Here, the group is running through Stranglethorn Vale, and you can see the hazards we had to face, such as tigers. She recorded the whole race, in 13 parts, and you can see them all on YouTube. (Warning, there may be some adult language in these videos.)
In Booty Bay, the group once again assembled on the roof of the bank, and formed a heart. Then, those who wished (I skipped this part this year) continued on to Orgrimmar, and tried to make their way to Garrosh.
Except for the problems of cross-realm phasing, the event is always fun, and of course, for a wonderful cause. SeeD plans to keep it going, so if you are interested, be watching in October next year for event information. You can also visit their Facebook page.
