Next X-Men Film Will Definitely Mix the Future with the Past

James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender will be joined in the next X-Men movie by their older selves, played once again by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen

Significant casting information has been released for the next X-Men film, “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” Bryan Singer, the director of the first two X-Men films was recently announced as the new director for the next installment, and he has announced that James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), and Nicholas Hoult (Beast) will be reprising their roles from the 2011 film “X-Men: First Class” for the upcoming film, which is set for a 2014 release. Joining them will be the Professor X and Magneto from the previous X-Men films, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

While it has not been made entirely clear how this blending of future and past will work, we know that “X-Men: Days of Future Past” will be at least partially based on the comic book story arc of the same name. This 1981 story, from the legendary run of Chris Claremont and John Byrne, deals with an alternate but dystopian future, where mutants are held in interment camps, and the action shifts back and forth between present and future timelines through the ability of team member Kitty Pryde to “mind-travel” between the time periods.

Given the casting announcements, it could be speculated that the upcoming film will feature Stewart and McKellen in more than just a framing sequence used to bridge the films, and that they could be significant players in the plot. We could also see others from the future, and while calls are already coming from fans to bring back James Marsden as Cyclops, no other casting announcements have been made beyond those from Singer this week.

Unless someone has Kitty’s ability to visit their future mind, I guess we’ll just all have to wait for Singer and others involved with the film to share more information. Singer has said that more information will come regarding “X-Men: Days of Future Past” but regardless, this does sound like a great cast that will open the door for a very interesting and hopefully action-packed movie.
