These days, it’s incredibly easy to make a video of just about anything and post it on YouTube. From comedy to drama, wonderful to terrible, and everything in between, you can find just about anything there, but one very popular type of video is music. There are traditional music videos, concert clips, and even “American Idol” and “The Voice” hopefuls. I ran across one that had been making the rounds on Facebook, and it instantly grabbed my attention.
This fantastic rendition of the Super Mario Bros. theme comes from Julien Neel (Mario) and Nick McKaig (Luigi). Everything was done a cappella, meaning the performers just used their voices. The vocal arrangements were written by Neel, who has been posting a cappella videos for several years, and is known on the Internet as Trudbol.
While Trudbol’s YouTube channel has some other video game performances, he has tackled other types of music as well. I was particularly taken with the following video, inspired by the adventures of a certain bungling French detective.
Once again, Trudbol provides great vocals for the classic Pink Panther theme. He collaborated with another video creator, Faireset, who handled the videos for this short adventure. The work of these two talented gentlemen fit together nicely to provide a very entertaining video.
Now, you have just seen and heard Trudbol’s version of some more interesting pieces, but he can do more than just specialty numbers. Many of the videos on his channel showcase his barbershop quartet style of singing. Many of the numbers are just him, performing all of the parts, but others are collaborations with other vocalists. I can’t share them all here, but from Disney songs to musical theater standards to Beach Boys and Bee Gees songs, he has several pieces for us to enjoy.
McKaig is also no stranger to YouTube, and on his channel you will find some of his favorite songs, and also a number of television and movie themes, including this rendition of the main Star Wars theme.
Like Trudbol, McKaig has more than just a talent for creating other instruments with his voice, but he has a wonderful straight singing voice. One video that showcases that is his cover of “I’ll Be There For You” by the Rembrandts, which is famous for being the theme to the television show “Friends.”
Hop over to YouTube and give Trudbol and McKaig a listen. I think you’ll find a few songs that you’ll really enjoy.
